Evangelizing the Culture Through Theater,
Not Unlike the John Paul II Way
As the Public Relations Director for SLP, Janice Gonzalez recently interviewed actor and film director Leonardo Defilippis while on tour in Eastern Canada. Read on to learn about a very unique connection between the ministry of SLP and Pope John Paul II.

Regarding the beatification of Pope John Paul II, what are your immediate thoughts?
This beatification reaffirms the incredible worldwide love for this Priest, Father, Bishop, Pope and leader of the Church. Overall for me, it highlights the intense relationship which the world has with this great man of God, and him with his flock... Read Full Article.

Your own theatrical and film career now spans 30 years. How did Pope John Paul II's love of theater influence you?
As a Shakespearean actor at the time of the Pope's election, I recall being mesmerized and surprised that this Polish Cardinal was elected Pope! I began to read his writings and encyclicals, and I learned that as a young man, he loved the theater and even struggled between becoming an actor or a priest. Just before starting this ministry, which back then I considered to be temporary, I too had the very same struggle... Read Full Article.

Did you meet Pope John Paul II? Is it true he blessed and viewed the THÉRÈSE film?
Yes, it's true. Before the Thérèse Movie, I had long felt a kinship with him, but it wasn't until I performed St. Maximilian Kolbe of Poland that I thought it was time to reach out to the Holy Father. The face-to-face meeting with His Holiness, however, did not take place until we completed our feature film on the life of St. Thérèse... Read Full Article.

Do you think John Paul II would be pleased with the work you continue to do today?
I hope so! Saint Luke Productions would not have been possible without the openness of John Paul II. We are certainly following his philosophy by presenting the Gospel message in other formats. I am so grateful that he was a spiritual force behind our efforts, and I pray that his influence is constantly a part of the formation of our ministry for years to come... Read Full Article.
